Why Reconciliation
Cameroon is in a phase of transition, whether its institutions acknowledge it or not. Two active armed conflicts, a deeply fractured political landscape, the weight of an unacknowledged colonial past, and the instrumentalization of ethnicity have collectively brought the country to a critical juncture.
This series seeks to unpack the concept of reconciliation through a Cameroonian lens by sharing data, stories, and insights. It is about preparing Cameroonians for a potential transitional process in which everyone will be needed to rebuild our social fabric and redefine the identity of our Nation.

A Cameroon in which reconciliation becomes an intentional national project—grounded in truth, justice, dialogue, and shared responsibility—enabling citizens to rebuild trust, strengthen social cohesion, and imagine a common future beyond conflict and division.

To advance informed and honest reflection on reconciliation in Cameroon by producing rigorous, accessible, and interdisciplinary analysis that explores the country’s conflicts, fractures, and possibilities for renewal.

We investigate five interconnected dimensions of reconciliation in Cameroon.
Meaning
What would reconciliation mean in the context of Cameroon? What model of reconciliation would be appropriate for Cameroon?
Necessity
What is the source of the need for a reconciliation process in Cameroon today? What added value could it bring to national unity? What preconditions would be necessary for its implementation?
Actors
Who are the key stakeholders in a reconciliation process? Who must be included, and who bears the primary responsibility for initiating and sustaining it?
Process
What form should a reconciliation process take? What mechanisms, institutions, and phases would be required to make it credible and inclusive?
Temporality
When is the right moment to pursue reconciliation? How do historical memory, current crises, and future aspirations shape the timing and sequencing of reconciliation efforts?
